Starcraft II Gets a Release Date?

Looks like Blizzard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blizzard might be firing up the Siege Tanks this year.

StarCraft II, Blizzard's highly anticipated sequel to the 1999 real-team strategy classic, has been given a pending release date by major retailers such as Best Buy Best Buy , Circuit City http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circuit_City , and GameStop GameStop-Advertising-Campaign (the story first broke yesterday courtesy of Joystiq). According to retailers' Web sites, Starcraft II will ship on December 3rd, 2008 and is currently available for pre-orders. This is certainly great news for fans since many people, including Tom's Games, wondered if the game would get pushed back to 2009.

While many are taking the news from GameStop as concrete, the retail giant has posted a disclaimer on its Starcraft 2 pre-release order page: "Official pricing and release dates have not been announced by Blizzard. Price and release date listed are estimates only and subject to change."

Blizzard refuses to comment on the rumor. While we can only hope the December 3rd release date is legitimate rather than being based purely on speculation, the fact that three major retailers are working off the same date gives this a bit more credibility. However, Blizzard is a company that will take any amount of time necessary to perfect its titles before release, so there's a chance the title could get delayed until next year. But keep your fingers crossed - Christmas may be coming early.
