Grand Theft Auto is finally coming to Nintendo. But it may not be in the style that gamers were hoping for.
After a slew of financial news and game announcements, Nintendo America's Reggie Fils-Aime revealed a new Grand Theft Auto title for the DS. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be a brand new game set in Liberty City, and fans of the series should expect the same kind of open gameplay and environments when it hits the DS (exclusive) at some point this fall. While many were hoping for GTA IV to be ported to the Wii, previous GTA games for the handheld market have not disappointed and yet another new story for the GTA universe may be a welcome addition to the franchise. In an otherwise lackluster Nintendo presentation, Chinatown Wars emerged as the highlight of the media briefing.
Nintendo also announced several new DS titles, including Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades, Spore Creature, and a new Pokemon Ranger title. Not to be outdone, the Wii also introduced new titles like Shaun White's Snowboarding, Call of Duty: World at War, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Star Wars: the Clone Wars, Rayman: Raving Rabbids, Wii Sports: Resorts, and Wii Music.
Nintendo is using Resorts as the flagship title for its new add-on for the Wii Remote called the Wii Motion Plus. The small attachment connects to the bottom of the Remote and adds enhanced arm movement detection, allowing for a more complete, fluid representation of what the player does while holding the Remote. The reaction from many was that the Wii Remote should have had this capability all along, but at least the new add-on will enhance gameplay to another level of fun. While no details were given, Nintendo did reveal that new Mario and Zelda games are in development.
Rumors of a newer, slimmer, sans-GBA slot DS being released were not addressed.
